Author of memoirs and other books about Appalachia, Verna Mae Slone was born in Knott County in eastern Kentucky. Reared from infancy by her father, Isom “Kitten Eye” Slone, after her mother died, Slone attended Hindman Settlement School until the eighth grade, when she left to help support her family. Slone married Willie Slone (to whom she was not related), a bulldozer operator; they had five sons, whose care frequently fell solely to Verna, as her husband’s work often took him away from home....
