Poet and educator Melissa Range was born in 1973 and reared in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Range identifies as Appalachian but is pulled away from the region as well.

Among her degrees, Range has a master’s in theological studies from Emory University, so her meditations on the qualities of faith carry as much depth of consideration as her musings on language and heritage. As she is not a member of an organized faith, her outsider’s perspective permits her a certain latitude. Despite the pugnacity of “Ofermod,” Range questions how people—mainly men—rationalize pursuit of spiritual ideals through warfare....
